A Story of Hope
When Emmanuel first came to our feeding center in early 2024, he was barely recognizable as a 5-year-old boy. Severely malnourished, he weighed only 12 kilograms—about half what a healthy child his age should weigh.
His story is a powerful reminder of why our work matters.
Emmanuel's Background
Emmanuel was born in a small village outside Bamenda. His father, a farmer, died when Emmanuel was just 3 years old. His mother, left to care for Emmanuel and his two sisters alone, struggled to provide even one meal a day.
"Some days, we had nothing to eat," Emmanuel's mother remembers. "I would give the children water just to fill their stomachs so they could sleep."
The malnutrition was taking its toll. Emmanuel was weak, listless, and frequently sick. He had never attended school—there was no money for fees, and he was too weak to walk the 2 kilometers anyway.
A Turning Point
A community health worker discovered Emmanuel's family during an outreach visit and referred them to Smile Organization. What happened next transformed their lives.
Week 1-4: Emergency Nutrition Emmanuel was enrolled in our therapeutic feeding program. He received specialized nutritious food designed to help malnourished children recover. Our health team monitored his progress daily.
Month 2-3: Steady Recovery Slowly, Emmanuel began to gain weight. His energy returned. He started playing with other children at the feeding center—something he'd been too weak to do before.
Month 4: School at Last When Emmanuel was strong enough, we enrolled him in school with a full scholarship. We provided his uniform, books, and supplies. His mother cried with joy.
Emmanuel Today
Now, a year later, Emmanuel is thriving. He:
- Weighs a healthy 22 kilograms
- Attends school every day
- Is learning to read and write
- Dreams of becoming a doctor
- Receives daily nutritious meals
"I love school," Emmanuel says with a bright smile. "I want to help sick children when I grow up, like the people who helped me."
