The Global Water Crisis Hits Africa Hardest
While access to clean water is taken for granted in many parts of the world, over 400 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to safe drinking water. In Cameroon alone, approximately 4-5 million people rely on contaminated water sources.
The True Cost of Dirty Water
When communities lack clean water, the consequences extend far beyond thirst:
Health Impacts
- Waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery kill thousands annually
- Diarrheal diseases are the second leading cause of death for children under 5
- Parasitic infections from contaminated water cause chronic illness and developmental delays
Economic Burden
- Medical expenses for treating water-related diseases drain family resources
- Time spent fetching water could be used for income-generating activities
- Sick children miss school; sick adults miss work
Gender Inequality
- Women and girls bear the primary responsibility for water collection
- Walking hours daily to fetch water leaves little time for education or work
- Girls often drop out of school due to water-fetching responsibilities
Success Story: The Bafut Community Well
In early 2024, the village of Bafut had no access to clean water. Women and children walked up to 3 hours daily to collect water from a distant, contaminated stream. Waterborne diseases were common, and school attendance was low.
With support from generous donors, Smile Organization drilled a borehole well in the heart of the community. Today:
- 350+ people have clean water within 10 minutes of their homes
- School attendance has increased by 40%
- Waterborne disease cases have dropped dramatically
- Women now have time for farming and small businesses
How Clean Water Changes Everything
When a community gets clean water, the ripple effects are transformative:
- Health Improves: Fewer diseases mean healthier, stronger families
- Children Learn: Kids attend school instead of fetching water
- Women Thrive: Time saved allows for education and economic activity
- Communities Grow: Better health and education drive economic development
Our Water Projects
At Smile Organization, we use multiple approaches to provide clean water:
- Borehole Wells: Deep wells with hand pumps for rural communities
