The State of Hunger in Cameroon
Cameroon, often called "Africa in miniature" for its geographic and cultural diversity, faces a growing hunger crisis that affects millions of its citizens. According to recent data, approximately 2.7 million Cameroonians are food insecure, with children bearing the heaviest burden.
What Causes Hunger in Cameroon?
The hunger crisis in Cameroon stems from multiple interconnected factors:
1. Conflict and Displacement The ongoing crisis in the Anglophone regions has displaced over 700,000 people from their homes. When families flee violence, they leave behind farms, livestock, and livelihoods. Displaced people often rely entirely on humanitarian aid for food.
2. Climate Change Changing weather patterns have made farming increasingly unpredictable. Droughts are more frequent in the north, while floods devastate crops in other regions. Smallholder farmers, who produce most of the country's food, are especially vulnerable.
3. Poverty About 37% of Cameroonians live below the poverty line. Even when food is available in markets, many families simply cannot afford it. The choice between food and other necessities like medicine or school fees is a daily struggle.
4. Limited Agricultural Infrastructure Most Cameroonian farmers lack access to modern farming techniques, quality seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation. Post-harvest losses due to poor storage facilities can reach 40% of crops.
How Hunger Affects Children
Children are the most vulnerable to hunger's devastating effects:
- Stunted Growth: Over 30% of Cameroonian children under 5 suffer from stunted growth due to chronic malnutrition
- Weakened Immunity: Malnourished children are more susceptible to diseases like malaria, diarrhea, and respiratory infections
- Cognitive Impairment: Hunger during critical development periods can permanently affect brain development
- Education Barriers: Hungry children cannot concentrate in school, perpetuating the cycle of poverty
