The Transformative Power of a Well
A single well can transform an entire community. When Smile Organization builds a well, we're not just providing water—we're unlocking potential and changing lives for generations.
Before the Well
Imagine life without running water:
- Walking 2-3 hours daily to fetch water
- Drinking from a stream shared with animals
- Children missing school because they must collect water
- Constant sickness from waterborne diseases
- No time for work, education, or rest
This was reality for thousands of Cameroonians before our water projects.
The Well-Building Process
Step 1: Community Assessment We work with local leaders to identify communities with the greatest need. We assess the geography, population, and best water solution for each location.
Step 2: Community Engagement We involve the community from the start. They contribute labor, form water committees, and take ownership of the project. This ensures long-term sustainability.
Step 3: Professional Drilling We hire professional drilling teams with proper equipment. Depending on the location, we drill boreholes 30-100 meters deep to reach clean aquifers.
Step 4: Pump Installation We install durable hand pumps that communities can maintain themselves. We choose proven technology that will last decades with proper care.
Step 5: Water Quality Testing Before handing over the well, we test the water to ensure it meets safety standards. Every well produces clean, safe drinking water.
Step 6: Training & Handover We train community members to maintain the pump, conduct basic repairs, and manage the water point. Water committees ensure fair access and collect small fees for maintenance.
The Impact: Numbers Tell the Story
Our water projects have achieved:
- 25+ wells built across North West Region
- 12,500+ people with clean water access
- 95% of wells still functioning after 1 year
- 40% reduction in waterborne diseases
- Increased school attendance in every community
Case Study: Mankon Village
Mankon Village, home to 200 people, had no clean water source. Women walked 2 hours each way to collect water from a distant stream. Waterborne diseases were endemic.
In 2024, donors funded a borehole well in the village center. Six months later:
- Water collection time: From 4 hours to 10 minutes
- Diarrheal disease cases: Down 80%
- Girl school attendance: Up 45%
- New businesses started: 3 small farms and a soap-making enterprise
The village chief says: "This well has changed everything. Our children are healthy, our women have time to work, and our community is thriving."
